Question: "What sort of New Year's Resolution should a Christian make?"

Answer:
The practice of making New Year's resolutions goes back over 3000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is just something about the start of a New Year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. In reality, there is no difference between December 31st and January 1st. Nothing mystical occurs at midnight on December 31st. The Bible does not speak for or against the concept of New Year's resolutions. However, if a Christian determines to make a New Year's resolution, what kind of resolution should he or she make?

Common New Year's resolutions are: to quit smoking, to stop drinking, to manage money better, and spend more time with family. By far the most common New Year's resolution is to lose weight, in conjunction with exercising more and eating healthier. These are all good goals to set. However, 1 Timothy 4:8 instructs us to keep exercise in perspective: "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." The vast majority of New Year's resolutions, even among Christians, are in relation to physical things. This should not be.

Many Christians make New Year's resolutions to pray more, to read the Bible every day, and to attend church more regularly. These are fantastic goals. However, these New Year's resolutions fail just as often as the non-spiritual resolutions, because there is no power in a New Year's resolution. Resolving to start or stop doing a certain activity has no value unless you have the proper motivation for stopping or starting that activity. For example, why do you want to read the Bible every day? Is it to honor God and grow spiritually, or is it because you have just heard that it is a good thing to do? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to honor God with your body, or is it for vanity, to honor yourself?

Philippians 4:13 tells us, "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." John 15:5 declares, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." If God is the center of your New Year's resolution, it has chance for success, depending on your commitment to it. If it is God's will for something to be fulfilled, He will enable you to fulfill it. If a resolution is not God honoring and/or is not in agreement in God's Word, we will not receive God's help in fulfilling the resolution.

So, what sort of New Year's resolution should a Christian make? Here are some suggestions: (1) Pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) in regards to what resolutions, if any, He would have you make; (2) Pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; (3) Rely on God's strength to help you; (4) Find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; (5) Don't become discouraged with occasional failures; instead allow them to motivate you further; (6) Don't become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6, "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun."

A New Year With The Lord
A new year is about to unfold
With new opportunities to explore
Doors will open for new experiences
New adventures with the Lord

Remember not the former things
The things of this past year
The Lord will do new things in us
Much more than we are aware

For He will make a way for us
As we put our trust in Him
And He will guide our every step
By His presence we have within

What God has placed within our hearts
We find we'll be able to do
If we look for the opportunities
We'll see the door to go through

We mustn't let anything hold us back
But rise up and take our place
And be all that God wants us to be
With a fresh touch of His grace

Greetings Everyone ...

Today, we finished selecting the twelve (12) person jury along with the two (2) alternates. The last of the prospective jurors excused for hardships (asked for by the potential jurors themselves and approved by the Judge), for cause (determined by the Judge alone), legal necessity (required by the law to ensure a fair trial) and preempt challenge (both the prosecution and the defense each have 10 preempt challenges that allow them to remove a perspective juror without giving a reason) left the court around 2:30 P.M.

The actual trial, with opening statements from the Alameda County Assistant District Attorney (D.A.) Robert Graff, will start Monday, January 5th, 2009, 9:30 A.M., in Department 109 on the fifth (5th) floor of the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse, 661 Washington Street, Oakland, California 94607-3922, where the Honorable Stuart Hing is presiding.

According to our schedule the trial should be completed by Friday, January 9th, 2009, no later than Tuesday, January 13th, 2009. Everyday court will be session from 9:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon and from 1:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. The court recesses for lunch between 12:00 Noon and 1:30 P.M.

Witnessing jury selection from the defendant's chair is an experience that has helped me grow stronger in Christ. While there is nothing left before us but the trial itself, I am still looking forward to watching and seeing how God unravels my circumstances. To borrow a page from Oswald Chambers (December 15th), and as a man of the cloth, it is my opinion the experience that benefits us most is not the one that simply teaches us what we did not know but the one that helps us speak a truth that we were struggling to express.

My wife and I want to thank everyone for petitioning the throne of God on our behalf and hope everyone will continue to do so. Truly the prayers of the saints have and will keep holding us up as we have determined in our hearts to face the future walking by faith and not by sight.

Finally, the Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF) [http://www.lldf.org/] is representing us and has proven to be nothing less than a Godsend. Please consider LLDF as you consider which organizations to financially support.

May God bless you all.

[revival-fire] Maybe – Maybe Not – A Word for the New Year

******* REVIVAL FIRE!!! *******

It has Happened – the Flood of the Prophetic!

New Years Mania?

I don't feel that this sudden rush of Prophetic words is a bad thing, though you could have prophesied its coming.

The Church does need direction. It does need encouraging.  It does need to hear the voice for God for now!

And if the church does not speak, that void will be filled by the enemy.  We should not be silent, though we should speak with wisdom.  And we should not all speak at the same time, it can become overwhelming.

With that said;

As you receiving the coming words for the church.  The direction. Remember, we could be the fulfillment of the word, or we could miss it.

The Bible says that we are a chosen generation.  Who is?  The Generation that lays hold of the promise and does not let go!

The prophetic is not simply the final say of the matter.  It requires action!

This year could be a turning point for the Bride!

It could be a year that the church rises from the ashes as a torn lover, and takes its place as "Victorious" "Overcomer" "Warrior!"

Or, we could again succumb to the folly of apathetic lethargy and have to repeat the lessons that God has been trying to teach us all along.

My father always told me, "Matthew, if you are going to learn a lesson, make sure you learn it the first time."

Let us instead, rise to the occasion.

If you have a word that the church is going to be victorious (which the Bible says anyway) Then don't wait for the magic wand of victory.  Rise and fight, most victories require battles!  (just ask Joshua)

If you have a word of doom, of judgment, then PRAY!  Gods heart is mercy and grace, so pray the heart of God to be stayed, to turn the hearts of people, that mercy would triumph!  A victorious church is not one that leaves the world in ashes around it. (Just ask Abraham, Moses, Jonah)

If you have a word for the Harvest then start sharing the good news!  Most sinners do not need another church service, but a friend!  They need to encounter the supernatural manifestation of a powerful God, where they are at!

Church – We have an opportunity to see the resurrection of the Bride to its rightful place of significance once again.   No matter what prophetic word you lay hold of for the new year, it will require action, action on your part, on my part.

Let us no longer wait for Christ to come riding in on a white horse and save the day!

We are Christ, Manifest HERE, on the earth, inside of each and everyone of us!

We have the answer – we have the healing, we have the GOOD NEWS!

It is not that we have a Christ who is going to save the day, but that we have a Christ who is here and now, and is SAVING the DAY!

This new year is exciting, and Defining, and yes – WE CAN MISS IT!

I don't want to!

Let us rise together – and lay hold of the promise –

WE ARE THE CHOSEN ONES!

Ha Ha!

[revival-fire] FW: Lakeland Pastor Starts off the New Year Outpouring Schedule

Forward to a Friend

Dear Eric,

Over the past few weeks I have been seeking God's prophetic word for the region in 2009.  2008 was a year of new beginnings where we saw the Outpouring start in Lakeland, Florida and spread to Reno and places around the world.  For the church it was a time when thirty years of praying for revival was birthed into these Reno Outpouring Meetings.  The word for 2009 comes from Haggai chapter 2 verse 7:

"And I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the desire of all nations, and I will fill this temple with glory" says the Lord of hosts."

We are seeing the nations being shaken now financially but in the next year we will see greater change and uncertainty throughout the world.  This will cause many to turn back to God for answers, for comfort, and for peace.  They shall return to the "desire of all nations."  Also, this will be a year when God's glory comes in new ways as we make a place for Him, a place for His glory.  The book of Haggai, a book that God has used prophetically for this region for years now, is a story about building God's House before we build our own house.  In years past there has been much building of our own houses.  Now it is time to build God's house.

What we saw in 2008 was just what was prophesied for 2008 "new beginnings."  There were spiritual changes in the heavens and in leadership of His flock.  Now, 2009 will see these beginnings building into a more mature and powerful expression of His will for our lives and for the powerful move of God in this region that all God's people have been crying out for.  There will be a separation of the sheep and the goats.  We will see which seed is on the path, or in the thorns, or in the good soil.

Pastor Stephen Strader is the pastor of Ignited Church in Lakeland Florida which is the church that God used to start this world wide Outpouring.  Pastor Strader will be the speaker at our January 8th and 9th Outpouring in Reno.  In speaking with Pastor Stephen as we were preparing for this meeting he told me that the Spirit of God is stirring up the Outpouring in Lakeland again.  I believe that God has Stephen coming to bring a fresh impartation to stir us up for 2009  which will be a year of maturing in revival and a year of making a home for His glory."

The Lord has prepared a table for us to come and dine at.  He has sent out the invitations.  Won't you come join in this new year of Outpourings and marvel at what the Lord will do in our midst?  The invitation has been given, who will come?

******* REVIVAL FIRE!!! *******

Hi Matt and all,

I find it funny that you posted this word today and I read it right when I was finishing my New Year sermon in which I am inspired to say ... well almost the same thing you are saying! Wow, this is my kind of Holy Spirit! One who knows what the church needs and goes about talking to us wherever we are!

I am not gonna preach my sermon here today, but just wanted to share a couple things, maybe some New Year resolution: go back to the source.

It seems that in these times when lots of people go into pains to go here or there to catch the last word from God, we have lost the sense of why we need God to speak!

It seems that we have turned ourselves into the center of it all. We want God to speak to us about us and reveal to us the plans He has for us and to show us what marvelous blessings He has for us.

Now there is nothing wrong about wanting to hear God speaking to us; but how about making God want to speak to us?

God, I want to be so close to your heart that you will want to speak to me.

Blessed!

JC

******* REVIVAL FIRE!!! *******

I believe I am like many who are awaiting the new year.  Just the title is exciting, "new".  In America if it is "new" then it must be better.  It does not even matter if what we have is really, truly old, the reality is, this is "new".

In point of fact, I am not even out of this year yet.  Not only is it not old, it is not over.  And this year was an amazing year.  That does not mean it was good, but it sure was amazing, filled with highs and lows, challenges and victories.  But this is not about my year, I just wanted to give a thought before this year was out, perhaps the first of many, and I do hope it causes us to think.

I wanted to title this, PLEASE – AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCMENT!

Before we all hit the keyboards with our 2009 prophetic words, and I know that the will be coming.  Anything and everything that can rhyme with 2009.

2009 the year of divine

2009 what's yours is mine

2009 I want a pine

2009 we are the vine

You get the picture, I hope.

I was thinking briefly about 2008 prophetic words.

Allow me to quickly state that I am weird about prophetic words, and, in the same sense, prophets. (I love them both)

I do not quickly label anyone a prophet, and I think that is for everyone's own good.  I don't think that true prophets are really looking to be labeled a prophet, and at the same time, don't need to be.

There are many who move in the prophetic, but prophet, I think we should be a little more careful, and respectful of the office.

And prophetic words, so many are quick to get one, and build their life around them.  It's the NEW concept again.  We have a whole Bible filled with amazing, insightful, powerful, directing words that have come direct from Gods own heart, yet we are looking for NEW prophetic words.

How about for 2009 we open the Bible and claim an old word, unfinished, for NOW!

Like Gods glory covering the whole earth.  Or this is a fun one, "Greater things than these."
I know, they are not new, but how many of us are doing them?  Too preachy, sorry.

When I look back at 2008, I read so many words about the year of abundance, the year of victory.

2008 the year of great.

2008 let's celebrate.

Sure, I guarantee you that many could write words of Gods abundance and victories, yet, as a whole, on the surface, that is not the state of this nation, nor is it the state of the church.

I read words about 2008 the year of the harvest.  Have there been salvations, YES!  But if this is it, this is the great harvest, then we missed something.  And I think that it could have been a year of the harvest, but every year could be the year of the harvest.

We don't need a new prophetic word for that, what we need to do is get active in doing what the Bible says.

Every year could also be a year of miracles, healings, provision, if we are willing to walk in obedience.

2008 was in fact the year of the "winepress." This is not a prophetic word, I can look back and see it.

What was in you was coming out!

2008 was the year that God was looking at Character, His character in us.

We said a lot of stuff, the real question is, did we believe any of it, and then, were we going to stand on it?

We wanted a year of abundance, but abundance of what?  I could say wealth, but heavenly wealth is not measured by dollars and cents, it is measured by the core of who a man is.

We wanted abundance, this was the year to get it.  You want victory, well,

"You cannot have a victory without first having a battle!"  -

This was an opportunity as a church and as a nation to grow.  We had some obstacles thrown our way, and God was looking to see who we were, our character, our core, what was in us.

What will 2009 be?  First and foremost, it will be a chance for us to take some responsibilities for our actions, or not.   It will be an opportunity for us to grow, grow up, or not.  It will be a chance to walk in the fullness of our calling, as a body of radical believers, a warrior bride…..or not.

This is not a prophetic word, it is what is laid out before us daily.  It is what Adam and Eve had in the garden and it is what every generation has had since.  And is there grace?  Yes, lavish downpours of grace.  Yet, there will be a generation that lays hold of the promise and walks in the fullness.  Is that 2009, it has yet to be decided, I will let you know next year.

What I would love for us to do, as a church, as radical believers, is not be so quick to claim the word for this year.

Let us not loosely throw "prophecies" around like they are cheap, and fulfill the worlds view of the church as some side show attraction.

If you have a prophetic word, how about you do what many of the true prophets of the Bible did, pray.  Pray the word through.  Pray for guidance, pray for support, pray for grace and mercy.  Pray, pray, pray.

As a disclaimer, I am not saying God will not download to you the prophetic word for this year, He may already have.

But what we do with it also defines us.  Eagerness is not one of the fruits of the spirit, but patience is.

I am looking forward to the new year, 2009, and I will be joining with the masses as we petition the throne of God.  Yet, I am not looking for the new word.  I would simply like the completion of some old ones.  And in the words of a great song writer, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."  And in the midst, God will download all sorts of new stuff, that I was not even looking for.

This year I am praying that I do not get so caught up in the what could be's or the maybe's, but that I lay hold of the fulfillment of the promises that are.

There is a whole lot of land out there for the taking, and I hear the sound of soldiers marching.
