Subject: Justice at the Gate -- What the Media Is Not Saying

Building strategic partnerships to mobilize Christians to pray effectively and to vote righteously
Justice at the Gate ----- PO Box 681148 ----- San Antonio, TX 78268 ----- 210-680-2313
We've all watched the news stories about Hurricane Ike, but the media didn't tell the whole story. They focused on Galveston and Houston. They were both hit, especially Galveston, but cities further to the East in East Texas and West Louisiana were devastated.
Many in Houston are suffering as well. Millions are still without electricity. Because the media has moved on to the presidential campaign and financial woes, the country doesn't realize that there is massive damage. There is tremendous need covering land mass and population greater than Katrina and Rita.
You may have received prayer alerts and requests for assistance from Somebody Cares America, Pray Texas, Tom Schlueter and others. The need is so very great and the nation does not realize it.
There is massive destruction in many places not reported on the news -- like Bridge City, Orange, LaPorte, Beaumont as well as places such as Galveston, etc., that you've seen on the news.
School officials in Orangefield have advised families in that school district to enroll their children in other schools. The public schools in Orangefield suffered such damage that they don't know when they'll be open again.
Churches were totally destroyed in Orange and Bridge City -- as well as massive destruction of homes. Six churches are working together in Orange to work out schedules for services in the same building.
There are huge needs. Many are homeless.
Because the media hasn't covered Ike or Gustav as they did Katrina, most Americans don't know the desperate needs in the Gulf Region. I'm sure this is true of Mississippi as well as parts of Alabama.
Most will not be able to send semi-truck loads of supplies, but we can pray and we can give. No gift is too small.
When you give to Somebody Cares, you touch Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and other states because they have people who actually live in the devastated regions administering the outreach efforts.
Ask your church to take a special offering for those who survived Ike and send it to Somebody Cares. You can give online at www.somebodycares.org or you can mail checks to:
If you have loads of supplies you would like to deliver, please call Somebody Cares at 713-621-1498 for logistical information.
Mark and Susie Roye of Blood N Fire in San Antonio are also a part of the Somebody Cares network. They have their portable kitchen in LaPorte, Texas to feed the hungry, including rescue workers.
Please pray for us on this journey of helping others. Pray against "compassion fatigue." It's easy for us to all grow weary in our well doing. The needs are great and many. Together, we CAN made a difference.
Please forgive the length of this email. It's important for you to understand the great need.
Charles Burchett from First Baptist Church in Kirbyville, Texas (Jasper County) said people were in line for blocks waiting for food and supplies at 7 AM Monday morning when he got to the church. A small truck of military meals and water was all they had to distribute, and it didn't come until 10:30 AM. Kirbyville wasn't hit as hard as other places this time, but there are still hundreds of people in need there.
Pastor Harold Jones, Trinity Church in Winnie, TX, reported damage to his church with windows blown out, water damage, etc., and the Hitching Post, their fellowship hall destroyed.
The following letter is from Pastor Harold's wife, Rip.
ALICE,
WHAT MY HUSBAND DID NOT TELL YOU IS THAT AFTER EACH HURRICANE WE USED THIS HITCHIN POST TO FEED AND SHELTER THE EVACS. DURING RITA WE HOUSED AND FED 92 PEOPLE TWO MEALS A DAY FOR 5 WEEKS.
THE COUNTY LOOKED TO US TO RUN THIS SHELTER AND TAKE CARE OF NEEDS AND THE ENEMY KNEW IT. SO HE MADE SURE THE HITCHIN POST WAS DESTROYED.
PRAY FOR OUR CITY A LOT WAS DESTROYED.
THERE SEEMS TO BE VERY LITTLE COMPASSION WITH THIS STORM AND IT WAS WORSE THAN RITA IN OUR AREA.
LOVE,
RIP
I got a call for help from Pastor Lynn Godsey of the Metroplex Hispanic Pastor's Alliance. Pastor Javier Zuniga of Houston is the head of a Hispanic Pastor's Alliance there. They are one of the few churches with electricity, and many are coming there for shelter and food. They need basic food and toiletry items.

I'm asking you to do as I will be doing when I finish sending out this email. Get on the phone and call pastors and businessmen in your area and ask them to send a special offering to one of these ministries. Somebody Cares has the greatest network and will distribute the money to the place of the greatest need. Unlike the Red Cross, every single dime of this will go to the need, not to salaries or administration.
I John 3:17-18 "But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and in truth."
The love of God dwells in you -- there is no doubt. You just didn't know. Now you do. Thanks for doing what you can.
Join me in giving and in letting others know the overwhelming need of our fellow Americans.

| A Disaster Net That Works! Register Your Church or Organization | | Somebody Cares and the Christian Emergency Network are partnering to equip and mobilize the Church to be ready in times of disaster. The strength of the Somebody Cares and CEN network lies in good communication and coordination. If you represent or know of church or ministry willing and able to help respond to the needs of evacuees and survivors in the aftermath of the storm please contact the Somebody Cares office through e-mail at somebodycares@somebodycares.org to let us know what part you can plan. If your church or organization can serve as a temporary shelter, has warehouse space for product, has trucks or buses for transporting people or product, has medical professionals available, or any other service please register with Somebody Cares so we can better coordinate response efforts. | | Dear John and Alice, Please note that even though Somebody Cares has moved to temporary offices, our phone number remains the same. It is 713-621-1498. Please contact us if you have an Ike related need or something to offer that will help our response efforts. | | | SCA Helps Out of Own Need Ike flooded Bridge City, TX -former Katrina distribution site The Somebody Cares offices in Houston were badly damaged during Hurricane Ike. But even in the midst of construction work, soggy carpets, and damaged equipment and a move to a temporary location, Somebody Cares was still reaching out to help others in greater need. Arrangements were made to open Camp Hope at Grace Community Church south campus in Houston where food and water will be distributed to the community as well as hot meals served. An elderly woman in a flooded house was sent evacuation assistance. Generators and tarps are being located for shelters, medical clinics and community service locations so they can continue to care for the needy. Plans were made to open a hot meal station in La Porte, Texas, a community along Galveston Bay that was hit hard by the storm. But this is just a start. Electricity is not expected to be restored to many areas for 3 to 4 weeks! Stores will not be open. Gas stations will remain closed. Air conditioning will not be available. City services will be minimal. Many more individuals, families and communities need the tangible expression of God's love that Somebody Cares offers. Please join us in offering help and hope to Ike victims Please make a generous donation now! | | SCA Network Disaster Response Sites (as of 9/12/08) Beaumont, Texas Cathedral in the Pines (Somebody Cares Southeast Texas) 2350 Eastex Frwy. During the Sunday morning service at New Life Church in Houston TX, Pastor Dusty Kemp preached to a smaller than normal Sunday morning audience, yet 15 people received Christ during the altar call. Pastor Kemp also reminded his congregation that tragedies are open doors for the Gospel as he encouraged his congregation to "work in the day and worship at night." "There has got to be a reason why our church was spared,' noting that in the midst of the destruction, New Life's damage was minimal, and they still have power and even air conditioning. "I often quote Luke 21:13, where Jesus tells us that these things are going to happen, but they are an occasion for our testimonies" Doug says. "Throughout the 27 years of our ministry, and most recently during the tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we saw God use tragedy as an avenue for the body of Christ to be a tangible expression of the Good News of the Gospel." | | The Somebody Cares Mission is to let people know that Somebody Cares. Because Jesus cares, we the church care. As a result, through grass roots efforts, communities are being transformed and the church is uniting. This is unity with a purpose.
