The Heart of the Matter Christine Beadsworth Sep 11, 2008 Hosea 9:1-2 O Israel, rejoice not for joy, like the peoples. For you have gone lusting away from your God; you have loved a reward on every grain floor. The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her. The threshing floor is also the place where God examines heart motives. Those who have hearts full of covetousness, seeking promotion and reward at the floor will be disappointed. God declares no wine will come forth from them – they are not chosen to be vessels dispensing the wine of the third day. Nor will they will not be nourished by the proceeds of the threshing floor. Ruth, on the other hand, embodies the company who go to the threshing floor seeking the Bridegroom and not His rewards. She lies down at His feet, in the place of a servant. She wants Him not His benefits. As a result, He pours six measures of barley into her widow's mantle. Those who go with clean hands and a pure heart to the threshing floor come away full. Those who come with hidden agendas are sent away empty-handed. The hidden motives of the heart are brought into plain sight as God separates with His winnowing fan. What is in our hearts – do we know what is motivating us from deep within? Prayer: Father, search me and know my heart. Find out if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting, amen.
